Why Australian and New Zealand Brands Don't Need to Wait for TikTok Shop to Launch Locally | Z MEDIA

TikTok Shop still has no confirmed launch date in Australia or New Zealand, and realistically it could be well over a year away. But waiting is a choice, not a requirement. Australian and New Zealand brands can sell into the UK and US TikTok Shop markets right now, without forming a local entity, using a Merchant of Record. Nearly 20 Australian brands are already doing exactly that, and TikTok itself has built the rails to support this kind of cross-border commerce elsewhere. Here is how it works and why brands who move now will have a two-year head start on the ones who don't.

The wait problem

There is still no confirmed date for TikTok Shop launching in Australia or New Zealand. Not a beta window, not a soft-launch quarter, nothing official. TikTok has rolled out Shop market by market, in the US, UK, Southeast Asia, and more recently across parts of Europe, and each rollout has followed its own timeline shaped by local payments infrastructure, tax registration requirements and regulatory sign-off.

Based on that pattern, a realistic estimate for an Australian launch sits somewhere between 12 and 24 months out, and that is if it happens on anything like the timeline brands are hoping for. New Zealand, historically, trails Australia by a further three to six months in TikTok's regional rollout sequencing. Put the two together and a New Zealand brand waiting for a local Shop could be looking at close to three years of sitting on the sidelines.

Two to three years is not a rounding error in ecommerce. It is enough time for a category to get crowded, for a slower-moving competitor to become the default brand a market associates with a product, and for the creator relationships that compound over time to belong to somebody else. Brands do not need to spend that time waiting. The market access already exists elsewhere, and it is available today.

The cross-border precedent

TikTok has already shown it is willing to build formal pathways for brands to sell into a Shop market without a local entity in that market. In May 2025, TikTok launched what it calls the Korea-US Cross-Border solution, letting Korean businesses join the US TikTok Shop using only their Korean business registration, a Korean passport, a Korean address and a virtual bank account, paired with a third-party logistics provider operating in the US. No US entity. No US bank account. No US business address.

This matters far beyond Korea. It is a public statement of intent from TikTok about how it sees the future of Shop expansion: sellers based in one country serving buyers in another, with compliance and logistics handled through structured, approved pathways rather than by every brand improvising its own workaround. TikTok built this because cross-border commerce is core to how it wants Shop to scale globally, not an edge case it tolerates.

CRSSBRDR offers Australian and New Zealand brands the practical equivalent of that model for the UK and US markets, available now rather than waiting for TikTok to formalise an AU or NZ specific version of it.

How it works for Australian and New Zealand brands

A Merchant of Record removes the single biggest blocker to selling cross-border: entity formation. Rather than an Australian brand incorporating a UK limited company or a US LLC, registering for VAT or sales tax, opening a local bank account and building out local compliance from scratch, a Merchant of Record like CRSSBRDR sits between the brand and the market and handles all of it under its own registered entity.

In practice that covers:

  • VAT and tax. CRSSBRDR is built by a licensed accountant specifically as a founding TikTok Shop Partner agency, so UK VAT and relevant US sales tax obligations are handled correctly from day one, not retrofitted after a compliance issue surfaces.

  • Compliance and documentation. Product listings, safety and labelling requirements differ between Australia, the UK and the US. CRSSBRDR manages the paperwork and product compliance needed to list legally in each market.

  • Fulfilment. Stock needs to reach UK or US customers within TikTok Shop's delivery expectations. That means either positioning inventory with a 3PL near the target market or building a fulfilment relationship that gets product there fast enough to meet Shop's speed and reliability standards.

What the brand itself needs to bring is comparatively simple: clean product data, existing compliance documentation from its home market as a starting point, and either stock ready to ship into a 3PL relationship or the willingness to build one. Everything else, the entity, the tax registration, the ongoing compliance obligation, sits with the Merchant of Record.

Why UK and US specifically

Australian and New Zealand brands are not being pointed at unproven or experimental markets. The UK is the most mature TikTok Shop market outside the US itself, with a deep, established creator ecosystem and strong performance in high AOV categories like beauty and skincare, exactly the categories where a lot of ANZ brands already have product-market fit domestically. The US is the largest TikTok Shop market in the world, full stop.

Both markets have years of Shop data behind them: proven affiliate and creator mechanics, established GMV benchmarks, known conversion patterns by category. Compare that to waiting on an Australian launch date that does not exist yet, in a market that will start from zero creator infrastructure and zero Shop purchase behaviour on day one. Selling into the UK or US today means competing in a market that already knows how to buy through TikTok Shop. Waiting for Australia means betting on a market that has to learn from scratch, on a timeline nobody can currently confirm.

What this looks like in practice

The first 90 days generally follow the same shape regardless of category:

Weeks 1 to 3: entity and compliance setup. CRSSBRDR gets the brand registered to trade into the target Shop market, sorts VAT or sales tax registration, and confirms product compliance and listing requirements are met.

Weeks 3 to 6: content and creator strategy. Listings go live, creator outreach begins in the target market, and initial content briefs get built around what already works in that market's Shop ecosystem rather than reinventing an approach from scratch.

Weeks 6 to 12: first campaigns. Seeding, affiliate activation and paid support run in parallel, with early sales data used to refine which products, price points and content angles are working before scaling spend.

By the end of the first quarter, a brand has live sales data from a real, proven TikTok Shop market, months or years before a local Australian or New Zealand launch would even be confirmed, let alone generating comparable data.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Assuming a local entity is required. It isn't. This is the single biggest misconception stopping ANZ brands from moving, and it is the one a Merchant of Record exists specifically to solve.

  2. Underestimating compliance differences. Labelling, ingredient disclosure and safety documentation rules differ between Australia and the UK or US. Treating home-market compliance as automatically transferable causes delays and listing rejections.

  3. Underbudgeting for content. Cross-border success on Shop still runs on creator content and seeding volume. Brands that treat this as a low-effort side channel underperform brands that resource it properly from the start.

  4. Treating it as a side project. A cross-border Shop launch needs the same operational attention as a domestic one: inventory planning, creator management, campaign iteration. Half-attention gets half results.

  5. Waiting for "someday." The brands already selling cross-border into UK and US Shop today will have a year or more of creator relationships, sales history and market position built up before a local AU or NZ launch is even confirmed.

Your 3 options

Option 1: Learn to run it in-house with TokShopOS. For brands who want to build TikTok Shop capability internally, TokShopOS packages the playbooks and SOPs built across $100M+ in GMV, so a team can run cross-border Shop operations without paying agency margins indefinitely.

Option 2: Use a Merchant of Record like CRSSBRDR. For brands that want to be selling into UK or US TikTok Shop without the overhead of entity formation, tax registration and ongoing compliance management, CRSSBRDR handles it end to end.

Option 3: Run it with an embedded agency partner like Z MEDIA. For brands that want a team that has already launched 300+ brands on TikTok Shop, including Anastasia Beverly Hills, COSRX, MyProtein, Wingstop and Meroda Cosmetics, to launch, manage and scale the channel from day one.

The smartest brands often combine all three: CRSSBRDR to handle compliance and market access, Z MEDIA to launch and stabilise the channel, and TokShopOS to bring the operation in-house once it is proven.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a UK or US company to sell on TikTok Shop?
No. A Merchant of Record like CRSSBRDR lets an Australian or New Zealand brand sell into UK or US TikTok Shop under its own registered entity, handling tax, compliance and fulfilment, so the brand never needs to incorporate locally.

Is selling cross-border into TikTok Shop actually compliant?
Yes. This is exactly what a Merchant of Record structure exists to guarantee. CRSSBRDR was built by a licensed accountant as a founding TikTok Shop Partner agency specifically to manage VAT, sales tax, customs and compliance correctly across markets.

What products work best for cross-border TikTok Shop selling?
Categories with strong existing Shop performance in the UK and US, such as beauty, skincare, supplements and fast-moving consumer goods, tend to translate well, particularly where AOV supports the economics of cross-border fulfilment.

How long does it take to get set up?
Entity and compliance setup through a Merchant of Record typically takes a matter of weeks, not months. Most brands can have listings live and creator outreach underway within the first month.

Will selling into the UK or US now hurt a future Australian launch?
No. If anything, it does the opposite. A brand arrives at any future AU launch with proven Shop creative, established affiliate relationships and real sales data, rather than starting from zero.

Do I need my own warehouse in the UK or US?
No. Stock is typically positioned with a third-party logistics provider operating in the target market, arranged as part of the Merchant of Record relationship, rather than the brand building its own local warehousing.

Why would TikTok support this kind of cross-border selling?
Because it already does, publicly. The Korea-US Cross-Border solution launched in May 2025 shows TikTok actively building infrastructure for exactly this model: sellers based in one country serving another market's Shop without a local entity.

What happens when TikTok Shop does eventually launch in Australia?
Brands already selling cross-border into the UK and US arrive at that launch with existing Shop experience, creator relationships and sales history, a significant advantage over brands starting fresh on day one of a new market.
